[It is late when Loki meets up with Aang. The hope he had at the beginning of said day is completely gone and it shows. He tries to tell himself that it is 'for the best'. She is safe and his older self cannot harm her there.
When he talks his voice sounds tired and is rather soft.]
I have had no luck either. I owe you my gratitude for your help.
[Pepper doesn’t mind the late reply. It’s pretty understandable in the circumstances.]
I don’t think that matters too much. [Loki’s clearly concerned, and he wants to find a person who is dear to him. Unfortunately, there’s a very real possibility that Leah might not be there, and after a pause she asks something more.] Did you check her residence?
Spring Cleaning is a tradition where people get rid of things they deem to be cluttering up the ships. Sort of like the opposite of storing up for winter.
[Arguably desperation could almost be seen as a form of hope in this case, although it won’t do Loki any good. Thinking that it’s a joke or a gag instead of Leah being gone falls squarely into the category of denial, and Pepper sighs softly, already certain of the truth.]
I really don’t--[But at the same time Loki seems aware of what he’s doing; it’s a conscious choice to believe what’s so unlikely, and Pepper can’t bring herself to be the one to shatter his illusions yet. Maybe he’s just not ready to accept it.]
I thought I heard horses in the background before; are you in the stables? [Not that she’s particularly close with Loki, but he did try to help her before—albeit in his own weird way. And she doesn’t really want him to be alone when the metaphorical dam breaks.] I could meet you there to help look, if you want.
[His choice. There are probably people Loki considers actual friends. Or maybe he doesn’t want to be around anyone when his stubborn refusal finally gives.]
[Billy follows his gaze up, brows furrowed, then shrugs aside his worries as best as he can and heads inside, jogging up the stairs. He'd just teleport them in, but he figures his magic is best saved for giving the spell the best boost it can get.]
Maybe. But standing around here won't get us answers. Come on, you can help me with it.
[Loki follows him and tries to focus on that little bit of hope he has left. Perhaps Leah is taunting him, like she liked to do. Or it was somekind of cruel punishment for kissing her during the feast of Valentine. That could be very possible as well.]
Aye.
[He remains silent until they arrive at the sixth floor.]
It is how it is, you see? When I return she'll be there. It is for the best. Et cetera, et cetera and so on.
[The words sound rushed and everything but sincere.
Loki had missed her when she had been back in Asgardia, the simplicity of their friendship, the fact he did not had to doubt her trust. He had been overjoyed when Leah appeared here, in the Land of Luceti and he wonders if Leah is aware that she has a really kind smile.
The sadness he feels is beyond crying. It was something heavy and it is probably something he had to overcome. Like he overcame everything.]
Don't be sorry. I do not think the fault lies with you. Leah is safe back home. She is safe. It is all that matters.
[Loki is good at lying to himself about his own well being. And he knows it as well. He is that good at it that he almost believes them. It is a form of protection.]
I am at the stables, yes. I am tacking up Frakki as we speak.
[A short silence. He does not know Pepper that well but the conversations he had with her had been pleasant.]
Of course. I am inside Frakki's stable if you need me. My plan is to search a part of the forest.
[Loki is fully aware how foolish he sounds but he rather does not want to give up on hope yet. He is a positive person and hope is a positive sentiment.]
Understand Loki, they took both of my brothers. I didn't say it was a good thing. If I could get my hands on them right now, I'd slaughter every last one of them.
You're right. That is important. I thought it'd be wrong if I assumed things were okay in your world. But if she is safe home, then... that's good. And she wasn't here that long to. So... so she didn't get much of a chance to be hurt by this place.
